How to Add a Custom URL to Your Prospectus
Adding a custom domain to your digital prospectus enhances your brand identity and provides a seamless experience for users. This guide will walk you through the steps required to configure a custom domain, with a focus on timelines and what to expect.
The first step is for your team to decide which custom domain you’d like to use for your prospectus. This will typically be something like prospectus.yourschool.ac.uk or courses.yourinstitution.edu.
Once you’ve confirmed the domain, share this with us so that we can begin the setup on our end.
After receiving your domain choice, our team will generate two critical DNS records that need to be added to your domain’s DNS settings. These are essential for routing traffic to your new domain through AWS Amplify (the underlying infrastructure provider for your Prospectus Plus front-end).
We will provide these records as soon as possible.
Timing is everything. Once we generate the DNS records, they must be implemented within 10 hours. This is to ensure a smooth and timely transition and is a requirement of AWS Amplify. We highly recommend coordinating with your IT team in advance to ensure the DNS records can be applied within this window.
Here’s a breakdown of what your IT team needs to do:
Log in to your domain’s DNS provider.
Navigate to the DNS management section.
Add the two records that we provide to you.
Save the changes.
Once the records are live, they can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to propagate across the internet.
Once your IT team has applied the DNS records, let us know as soon as possible. We’ll verify that everything is correctly set up.
After receiving confirmation that the DNS records are live, we’ll handle the final configuration on AWS Amplify. This step ensures that your digital prospectus is fully functional under the custom domain.
Choose and confirm your domain: Notify us of your custom domain.
We provide DNS records: Within 1-2 business days.
Implement DNS records: Your IT team must apply the records within 10 hours.
Final changes on our end: We complete the setup once you notify us the DNS is in place.
- DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully propagate, but in most cases, the transition is much quicker.
- Be sure to coordinate with your IT team in advance to minimise downtime and ensure the records are added within the 10-hour window.
- Subdomains are advantageous as they do not incur any extra costs and can easily be set up by the person or team that manages your primary domain. Alternatively, you can opt for a new domain altogether. In this case, you'll need to purchase it from a domain registrar
By following this process, you’ll ensure your prospectus is smoothly transitioned to its new custom domain, offering a professional and branded experience to your users.
